Jacks are pretty simple; they’re pistons that use hydraulic pressure to lift cars (or whatever you’re working on) into the air via a system of pipes and chambers. The reason they fail is either because rubber seals wear out or the check balls (tiny little BBs that help move the hydraulic fluid between chambers) fail.

Hydraulic floor jacks are made out of steel or aluminum. The material does not significantly impact the lifting capacity of the hydraulic jack. Steel: Steel hydraulic floor jacks weigh approximately 45 kg (100 lbs). They are heavier than aluminum, but the body can resist damage much better.

Fill the reservoir with

Fill the reservoir with hydraulic jack oil.

Pour until the oil is just below the lower rim of the fill hole, then stop. Wipe away any excess oil on the rim before replacing the plug. Use a funnel to avoid spills.

ISO Grade 32, Mineral oil
LUBRIPLATE Hydraulic Jack Oil is a heavy duty, high pressure, anti-wear, and non-corrosive hydraulic fluid recommended for hydraulic jacks and similar applications.

To lift the car with a hydraulic floor jack, pump the long handle up and down until you’ve reached the required height. It should only take between three and 10 pumps depending on the jack used. Don’t lift the car any higher than you need to.

One of the most common reasons a jack won’t lift is incorrect fluid levels. First, remove the oil plug and look into the chamber to check the oil level. The suggested level for most floor jacks is 3/16 to a quarter above the reservoir. If you need to replenish, make sure you have the highest-grade oil possible.

In-service Inspection and Maintenance
Jacks should be cleaned to remove any dirt or debris paying particular attention to racks, screws, the area around top ram seals etc. Hydraulic oil levels should be checked and the oil topped up or drained and replaced. Moving mechanical components should be lubricated etc.

These floor jacks are adjustable. They are made up of heavy-duty carbon steel.

Check the hydraulic fluid The best way to do this is to inspect it through the fill hole. You’ll need to place your jack on a flat surface and remove the cover plate (usually held down with screws) to access the fill hole. Check your owners manual because some jacks will have a separate fill and bleed holes.
